After emerging from a command bunker during the harrowing days of the Battle of Britain, Winston Churchill was momentarily struck silent by the courage and sacrifice of England’s Royal Air Force pilots. He then delivered one of the most enduring lines of his career: “Never was so much owed by so many to so few.” This poster features an image of the RAF heroes beneath the prime minister’s powerful quote, which became a rallying cry for the empire’s forces and the title of one of Churchill’s most iconic speeches.

Created in 1982 by the French American artist Arman, this monumental work titled School of Fish II, a wall relief composed of vice grips, transforms industrial hardware into a rhythmic, aquatic abstraction. The work stands as a quintessential expression of Nouveau Réalisme and the philosophical lineage that stretches back to Marcel Duchamp’s readymades. One of Arman’s groundbreaking “Accumulation” works, the piece hails from the Hechinger Collection, formed over decades by the hardware-industry pioneer John Hechinger Sr.
