The result highlighted a week of sales that brought in $51.17 million in U.S. coins. Combined with $16.95 million from the ANA World & Ancient Coins auctions, the events totaled $68.13 million.
“This magnificent Stella is one of just nine traced examples, and its result shows once again the extraordinary strength of the market,” said Todd Imhof, Executive Vice President at Heritage. “Auction after auction, Heritage is delivering new and emboldened bidders, which results in highly satisfying prices for our consignors.”
Two additional rarities from The Costa Family Collection, Part I also broke the $2 million threshold:
- 1879 Liberty Head Quintuple Stella, PR64 Deep Cameo PCGS: $2.16 million, breaking its own record set in 2016.
- 1874 Bickford Ten Dollar, PR65 Deep Cameo PCGS: $2.04 million, surpassing its 2022 Heritage record.
With six seven-figure results overall and dozens of record prices across multiple collections, the ANA event reaffirmed Heritage’s dominance in the field. The new benchmark for the Coiled Hair Stella proves once again that when it comes to selling the rarest U.S. coins, Heritage Auctions is the best place for consignors to achieve historic results.
