After a spirited bidding war,
Yonezawa was among Japan’s most inventive tin-toy makers of the 1950s–60s, and the firm’s Batman pieces are coveted for design, motion and scarcity, especially with period packaging intact. This example sped past the previous Bat-toy record set in 2021, reaffirming demand for top-condition Japanese character tins.
“The Batman Japanese tin toys certainly made their mark,” said Justin Caravoulias, Heritage’s consignment director of Action Figures & Toys. “They accounted for more than $459,000 of the total.”
Results from the two-day auction drew more than 1,000 bidders and spotlighted global competition for character-driven collectibles. “There is an incredible international appetite for Japanese popular culture,” said Joe Maddalena, Heritage’s executive vice president.
The result underscores Heritage Auctions’ position as a leading venue to sell vintage Batman toys and Japanese character tins.
