Prerelease Raichu Sets a New High for English-Language Pokémon Cards

The one authenticated example brought $555,000 at Heritage’s September Trading Card Games sale.

By Intelligent Collector Staff | September 22, 2025

Heritage’s Sept. 19–20 Trading Card Games Signature® Auction delivered a headline result that’s hard to overstate in early Pokémon collecting: the lone PSA-authenticated Prerelease Raichu surfaced publicly and reset the benchmark for an English-language Pokémon card at auction.

The card — Pokémon Raichu 14 Unlimited Base Set Prerelease PSA EX-MT 6 (Wizards of the Coast, 1999) — realized $555,000 (including buyer’s premium), and Heritage characterized it as the only example authenticated and encapsulated by PSA at the time of the sale. That kind of population fact is the entire story: when a “maybe it exists” error becomes a single verified piece, price discovery tends to be immediate.

The press release frames the Prerelease stamp as an accidental carryover from Wizards of the Coast’s early test-league era, when official prerelease promos were associated with expansion sets like Jungle, Fossil, Team Rocket, and Gym Heroes. The implication is clear: this Raichu is collected less like a card and more like a document from the game’s earliest production and distribution processes.

Market-wise, the result lands in a period when buyers are increasingly paying premiums for verifiable uniqueness — whether that’s population reports, documented errors, or early-production artifacts with an origin story that can be explained quickly and checked. For English-language Pokémon, that’s where the sharpest money has been concentrating.
