Planet Hollywood Auction Brings $15.6 Million at Heritage, Setting Records for Titanic, Indiana Jones and More

HERITAGE’S MARCH 25, 2024 “TREASURES FROM PLANET HOLLYWOOD” AUCTION REALIZED $15.68 MILLION, WITH ICONIC PROPS AND COSTUMES FROM TITANIC, INDIANA JONES AND KINGPIN LEADING THE HISTORIC EVENT.

Heritage Auctions’ Treasures From Planet Hollywood event realized $15.68 million, making it one of the most successful movie prop and costume auctions ever staged. Nearly 1,600 lots from the famed restaurant’s archives drew more than 5,500 bidders worldwide, surpassing Heritage’s previous record for the category and establishing a new benchmark for modern movie memorabilia sales.

“This auction proves what I’ve known all along: the interest in and appetite for modern-movie props and costumes is profound, deep and insatiable,” said Joe Maddalena, Heritage’s Executive Vice President.

The top lot was the wood panel from Titanic (1997), the piece of debris that saved Rose but, controversially, not Jack. The iconic prop realized $718,750, making it the most valuable item in the sale and one of five Titanic lots to hit six figures. Other highlights from the film included the ship’s helm wheel ($200,000), Rose’s chiffon dress ($118,750), and a prototype of the floating panel ($125,000).

From Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (1984), the only whip matched to on-screen use sold for $525,000, the highest price ever for an Indiana Jones prop. A set of three Sankara stones brought $100,000, while the film’s Holy Grail sold for $87,500.

Bill Murray’s red-rose bowling ball from Kingpin (1996) became the world’s most valuable bowling ball at $350,000. Shaquille O’Neal’s Los Angeles Lakers uniform, photo-matched to Kobe Bryant’s 1996 rookie debut, sold for $262,500, setting a record for any Shaq memorabilia at auction.

Other standout sales included Jack Nicholson’s axe from The Shining ($125,000), the Barbasol can from Jurassic Park ($250,000), and Princess Leia’s blaster from Return of the Jedi ($150,000).

With its mix of cinema-defining props and cultural icons, the Planet Hollywood sale proved a landmark in movie memorabilia collecting, and once again demonstrated that Heritage Auctions is the best place to sell iconic props and costumes from film history.
