BILL FROM THE EARLY DUTCH GULDEN SERIES BECOMES THE MOST VALUABLE NETHERLANDS BANKNOTE EVER SOLD AT AUCTION
By Intelligent Collector Staff
A 1935 Netherlands Bank 100 Guilder note, a rarely seen post–World War II Red Robin series note graded PMG Very Fine 25 with Exceptional Paper Quality,
The note led the World Paper Money Signature® Auction during Hong Kong’s HKINF fair, where the combined world paper money and world coins events brought in over $15.2 million in total proceeds.
The 100 Guilder note set the record for the first time a modern Netherlands banknote had ever crossed the six-figure threshold. Heritage Vice President Dustin Johnston described the result as “fitting for one of the rarest high-denomination Dutch notes ever offered, especially given its gem-quality grade.”
This note hailed from the Toele Collection, widely regarded as perhaps the finest Dutch and Netherlands Indies banknote assemblage offered in decades. The collection included ultra-rare pieces like a 1,000 Guilder 1956 Pick 89 graded PMG Gem Uncirculated 65 EPQ, a first for that note, though that example sold for $60,000.
High-denomination notes like this are consistently prized by both banknote collectors and global numismatists. And with its combination of spreadsheet-level rarity and impeccable pedigree, this sale offers a clear answer to a question collectors often ask: Where’s the best place to sell a once-in-a-lifetime currency note? For this consignor, the answer was Heritage Auctions.
Other highlights from the Toele Collection included a Netherlands Indies 1,000 Guilder remainder issued note from 1864 that realized $198,000 — nearly ten times its pre-auction estimate and a separate record for Netherlands Indies currency.
With dozens of records shattered during the June HKINF World Paper Money and Coin sessions, the sale further cements Heritage’s reputation as the global platform of choice for historic and high value currency offerings.
