Looking Back … 1971

Walt Disney World Resort opens in Florida. The first Eisenhower dollars (above) are struck at the Philadelphia Mint. All in the Family debuts on CBS. The Baltimore Colts defeat the Dallas Cowboys in Super Bowl V while the Pittsburgh Pirates defeat the Baltimore Orioles in the World Series. And Apollo 14 lifts off on the third successful lunar landing mission.

Taiwan-born Richard Lin (1933-2011) is among the most influential minimalist artists of his generation. His 1971 oil on canvas Welsh Summer realized $225,000 at a May 2018 Heritage auction.

Sports - baseball bat

SPORTS

Major League Baseball Hall of Famer Roberto Clemente (1934-1972) won four batting titles and led the Pittsburgh Pirates to championships in 1960 and 1971. The right fielder is also remembered for his humanitarian legacy. A 1971 Clemente game-used bat, with a Pirates team letter confirming World Series use, realized $198,000 at an August 2019 Heritage auction.

WINE - Romanee

WINE

Romanée-Conti has been called “one of the greatest wines of the world.” A 1971 Romanée-Conti vintage, Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, sold for $92,250 at a December 2020 auction.

Robert Crumb (b.1943) is a pioneer of the underground comix movement. His original art for the cover of Promethean Enterprises #3 (1971) realized $35,850 at a November 2016 Heritage auction.
