WHEN IT COMES TO BASEBALL, FOOTBALL, BASKETBALL AND HOCKEY, THESE 12 SUPERSTARS ARE NATIONAL TREASURES
By Steve Lansdale
Debating “the greatest” in any measurable metric has been around since the earliest days of professional sports.
Unless it’s a question of who wears the label best as a nickname – Muhammad Ali was referred to simply as “the Greatest” and Wayne Gretzky as “the Great One” – a declaration of which athlete, coach or team can be ranked “first” is rarely without debate.
Some debates make sense, especially team debates, in which a theoretical matchup between squads from different eras never could be played. Could the 1985 Chicago Bears beat the 1972 Miami Dolphins? Also implausible, and sometimes illogical, are debates about individuals. It is only recently acceptable to suggest that LeBron James can challenge Michael Jordan’s perch atop the hierarchy of the greatest basketball players of all time. But what about Bill Russell or Kareem Abdul-Jabbar? In baseball, is it Babe Ruth or Hank Aaron? Cy Young or Sandy Koufax?
Equally challenging is identifying the greatest when it comes to collectibles. In other words, who has the most valuable collectibles in sports? More specifically, which living legends have the most valuable collectibles in sports?
For this story, Intelligent Collector pored through the archives of Heritage Auctions, the world’s largest auctioneer of collectibles and sports memorabilia, to find prices realized for living sports legends. We whittled down the list to the top five lots for each living legend in four sports: baseball, football, basketball and hockey.
It’s easy to assume athletes with the greatest statistical and championship performances would top the list, but that is not always the case. If performance and current popularity automatically dictate the value of collectibles, mega-stars like LeBron James and Tom Brady would dominate this list. Instead, you’ll find that the legends here are all retired, with the collectibles market selectively aging only the most desirable and significant treasures related to each athlete.
Of the 60 items on this list, most are trading cards and game-worn jerseys. But there are a few surprises: two paintings by renowned sports artist LeRoy Neiman, Wayne Gretzky’s 1979 rookie contract, and Michael Jordan’s Air Jordan sneakers make the list.
Baseball legends have the most collectible value. Baseball Hall of Famer Sandy Koufax ranks first among our living legends list, followed closely by “The Say Hey Kid” Willie Mays. Only two others – Pete Rose and “Miracle on Ice” team captain Mike Eruzione – make the million-dollar club.
If you’re looking for athletes walking around today with a golden touch, look no further than these 12 living legends.

METHODOLOGY
The Intelligent Collector began by entering a list of living athletes into the Heritage Auctions archives, which reflects prices realized for more than 4.6 million collectibles. Our list excluded non-athletes, such as coaches and managers. We then pulled the top five lots, based on sale price, for each athlete on the list. Each collectible entry includes lot description, price realized and date sold. Items that were purchased and resold are not included, and only appear once; the list includes duplicate items, such as different examples of a trading card.
