Gil Kane’s Original ‘Spider-Woman’ Cover Art Sells for Record $690,000 at Heritage Auctions

THE 1977 DEBUT OF JESSICA DREW SETS A NEW HIGH FOR THE ARTIST’S WORK DURING $18.5 MILLION COMICS & COMIC ART EVENT

By Intelligent Collector Staff

Gil Kane’s original cover art for Marvel Spotlight No. 32, the 1977 issue that introduced Spider-Woman, sold for $690,000 at Heritage Auctions on April 6, setting a new auction record for the artist and highlighting the enduring appeal of Bronze Age comic art.

The piece, featuring Jessica Drew in her first appearance, was a standout in Heritage’s four-day Comics & Comic Art Signature® Auction, which realized a total of $18.5 million. This sale underscores the growing market for original comic art and the significant role Heritage Auctions plays in connecting collectors with iconic pieces.

Kane’s dynamic composition captures Spider-Woman mid-action, a testament to his influential style that helped define Marvel’s visual identity in the 1970s. The artwork not only marks the debut of a now-beloved character but also reflects a pivotal moment in comic book history when publishers expanded their universes with diverse and complex heroes.

This record-breaking sale also answers a question many consignors ask: Where is the best place to sell my valuable comic art?

Other notable results from the auction include Frank Frazetta’s original cover art for the paperback Night Walk, which sold for $528,000, and Arthur Adams and Terry Austin’s wraparound cover for New Mutants Special Edition No. 1, achieving $240,000, a record for Adams.

These results reflect a robust market for original comic art, with collectors eager to acquire pieces that represent significant moments in comic book history.
