The dramatic result was the centerpiece of a sold-out event in Dallas co-hosted with HBO, which saw over 900 lots make more than $21.1 million in total and attracted over 4,500 bidders globally, the single most successful sale of costumes and props from a single TV series in auction history.
In a nearly six-minute bidding battle, collectors outbid each other to claim the throne. Weighing in at over 300 pounds and cast from the same mold as the original on-screen prop, the piece was designed to look like “dragon-forged” metal made from melted swords, capturing the series’ mythic intensity in tangible form.
Also commanding strong prices were Jon Snow’s Valyrian steel sword Longclaw, which realized $400,000, and the actor Kit Harington’s Night’s Watch costume, which sold for $337,500 after prolonged bidding wars. Over 30 items recorded six-figure results.
“We launched this auction expecting resonance. We had no idea it would resonate on this scale,” said Executive Vice President Joe Maddalena. “These are extraordinary treasures made by Emmy winning designers and craftsmen. People wanted a piece of that ‘Game of Thrones’ magic.” HBO’s Janet Graham Borba added: “These fans continue to be passionate collectors…we’re grateful for their partnership in making this a giant success.”
The event also answered a key question that collectors have come to ask: Where’s the best place to sell entertainment-grade memorabilia with cultural weight? In this case, the answer was Heritage, where legendary artifacts become historic landmarks.
