Editor’s Picks – September 2026 First Edition

Three choice lots from upcoming Heritage auctions

Sports

trophy

Presented to Garry Kasparov following his legendary 1990 World Chess Championship victory over Anatoly Karpov, the Korloff Trophy is as extraordinary as the rivalry it commemorates. Crafted by Parisian jeweler Maison Korloff using a kilogram of pure gold and set with 1,022 black and white diamonds totaling approximately 120 carats, its mirrored “K” forms evoke the two chess titans. In a dramatic conclusion to one of chess history’s greatest rivalries, Kasparov retained his title by the narrowest of margins.

Modern & Contemporary Art

A significant figure in the Los Angeles art scene since the 1960s, Tony Berlant emerged alongside artists including Ed Moses, Ken Price, and Richard Diebenkorn. Ginza is an especially engaging example of Berlant’s distinctive practice. Fragments of colorful printed metal are cut, arranged, and meticulously secured to wood with hundreds of steel brads, transforming the fragments into a richly textured surface. Berlant first explored the archetypal house form in the early 1960s and returned to it repeatedly during his career.

This original production cel featuring Homer, Marge, Bart, Lisa, and Maggie Simpson comes from “Dancin’ Homer,” the fifth episode of Season 2 of The Simpsons. Written by Ken Levine and David Isaacs and directed by Mark Kirkland and David Silverman, this early fan-favorite episode follows Homer after his impromptu dance to “Baby Elephant Walk” at a Springfield Isotopes baseball game earns him a job as the team’s exuberant mascot. His infectious enthusiasm helps turn the struggling club into a winner.
