Space Exploration
This medal was one of 450 flown aboard the first manned moon landing in July 1969, alongside crewmembers Neil Armstrong, Michael Collins, and Buzz Aldrin. The obverse depicts Collins’ original concept for the mission insignia, with the eagle carrying an olive branch in its mouth. NASA thought the eagle’s open talons looked too “warlike,” so the olive branch was moved to the claws. This is one of the only major official items that features the original insignia.
