Editor’s Picks – October 2026 First Edition

Three choice lots from upcoming Heritage auctions

U.S. Coins

coin

This coin is one of just 75 proof Liberty double eagles minted in 1898. Author and numismatic researcher John Dannreuther estimates there are between 35 and 50 remaining survivors, although there is some disparity between the two leading grading services, which list 82 certification events between them — seven more than the total number of coins struck. Of the surviving population, two are in the National Numismatic Collection at the Smithsonian Institution, and a third is in the collection of the American Numismatic Society.

1898 $20 JD-1, R.5, PR65 Deep Cameo PCGS

Rare Books

book

Printed in Edinburgh by Alexander Arbuthnot and Thomas Bassandyne, this 1579 Geneva Bible is the first Bible printed in Scotland. Its production followed action by Scotland’s General Assembly and Parliament intended to place vernacular Bibles in churches and in households above a prescribed level of means. Often called the Bassandyne Bible, the edition occupies a central place in the histories of Scottish printing, religious practice, and literacy.

Musical Instruments

Hohner introduced its official Bob Dylan harmonica collection in 2008 in collaboration with Dylan, whose use of the harmonica has been a defining element of his music since the beginning of his career. The seven-piece BDSS7 was the most limited version produced, with only 25 complete sets made worldwide. The offered set includes seven Hohner Marine Band harmonicas in the keys of C, G, D, F, A, B, and E, each signed by Dylan in black ink. According to Hohner, each harmonica was also played by Dylan.
