In 1972, the Q1 Corporation in New York released the Q1 Desktop Micro Computer with an internal printer – the world’s first complete and standalone microcomputer with a built-in screen and keyboard. Computers before the Q1 were fitted with multichip microprocessors, while the Q1 was the first powered by a single chip, the Intel 8008. The pioneering device, with its distinctive orange screen and integrated keyboard, showcases a design far ahead of its time.

Upon George Nakashima’s death in 1990, it was not a foregone conclusion that the studio bearing his name would survive. Almost 34 years later, George Nakashima Woodworkers has continued to innovate and thrive under the leadership of his daughter, Mira Nakashima. Commissioned in 1989 by the late philanthropist Ruth Sylvia Nelkin and finished in 1991, this fine Minguren I coffee table is a physical record of the generational transition between these two transformative artists.
