Coiled Hair Stella Hits $2.13M as CSNS Sale Resets Multiple U.S. Coin Records

Seven-figure patterns and condition rarities from the Presidio and Pizza Collections helped push Heritage’s CSNS U.S. Coins auction to $26.9 million.

Heritage Auctions’ April 29–May 2 CSNS U.S. Coins Signature® Auction closed at $26,918,208, led by a new record for a gold stella pattern and a second seven-figure result from the Presidio Collection.

The top lot was the 1879 $4 Coiled Hair Stella, Judd-1638, PR67 Cameo NGC, which realized $2,135,000. Heritage said the result surpassed the prior auction record of $1,464,000 set in January 2026, and noted the coin’s rarity with 14 documented examples.

Another centerpiece from the same collection followed: the 1933 $10 Indian Eagle, MS65 PCGS. CAC, which brought $1,586,000. Heritage described it as a new auction record for the issue, and highlighted its long-known status as a major 20th-century gold rarity.

Stellas remained a theme deeper into the Presidio grouping. The 1880 $4 Coiled Hair Stella, Judd-1660, PR62 NGC finished at $854,000, and the 1880 $4 Flowing Hair Stella, Judd-1657, PR65 NGC. CAC realized $777,750, both described by Heritage as grade-level records.

Condition rarities from the “Pizza Collection” supplied another headline result. A 1927-S Standing Liberty Quarter, MS65+ Full Head PCGS. CAC sold for $610,000, which Heritage said eclipsed the previous auction record for any Standing Liberty quarter.

Key-date silver also produced a notable benchmark: the 1893-S Morgan Dollar, MS63 PCGS brought $488,000, cited as a record for that grade.

Altogether, the results suggest continued competition for two things the U.S. coin market consistently rewards: trophy-level rarity (especially storied patterns like stellas) and “stopper” condition coins in series where top-end examples are scarce.
