Two rare Brazilian gold counterstamps shared top honors at Heritage Auctions’ April 29–30 CSNS World & Ancient Coins sale, each realizing $292,800 and establishing an auction record for its type. The auction reached a total of $11,888,476, with results announced in Dallas on May 4.
The first was an Afonso VI gold Counterstamped 4400 Reis dated 1686 and graded MS63 by PCGS. Produced during the transition from hammered to machine-made coinage, it bears a crowned-globe counterstamp and a milled edge intended to discourage clipping.
The other was an Afonso VI gold Counterstamped 4400 Reis dated 1668 and graded AU50 by NGC. One of only a few dozen known, the coin returned to Heritage 15 years after its previous appearance.
Brazilian material remained prominent throughout the sale. A 1646 Pernambuco Dutch Colony gold three-guilder klippe graded AU55 by NGC set a type record at $268,400.
Beyond Brazil, a Nicholas II 1896 gold Specimen Imperial of 10 Roubles graded SP61 by PCGS also brought $268,400. An Alexander III gold distater struck during the Macedonian ruler’s lifetime realized $158,600.
The results suggest that collectors continue to compete for world and ancient coins combining historical importance, small surviving populations and strong certification. The two Brazilian leaders attracted more than 100 bids between them, indicating particular momentum in a category that has gained broader international attention.
For collectors deciding where to consign significant international numismatic material, the depth and range of these results support Heritage Auctions as the best place to sell world and ancient coins.
