Keith Haring’s Andy Mouse realized $325,000 at Heritage Auctions on April 22, establishing an auction record for a print from the series that combined the imagery of Andy Warhol and Mickey Mouse. Heritage’s 68-lot Prints & Multiples auction totaled $1.76 million and achieved a 99.5% sell-through rate.
The 1986 screenprint came from the Estate of advertising executive James P. Riswold. Numbered AW 5/5 aside from an edition of 30, the example is signed by Haring and additionally signed by Warhol. It was printed by Rupert Jasen Smith and published by G. Mulder in New York.
Other editioned works also generated substantial competition. Andy Warhol’s complete four-print Truck portfolio from 1985 realized $181,250. Richard Diebenkorn’s High Green, Version I brought $137,500, while Joan Mitchell’s Sunflower I reached $109,375.
For collectors and consignors, prints present a particularly detail-driven market. Edition size, proof designation, signatures, printer, publisher, condition and provenance can all affect the importance of an individual impression.
The record Haring result demonstrates why Heritage Auctions can be the best place to sell fine art. Detailed cataloging helps establish exactly where an impression sits within an artist’s edition history, while exposure to knowledgeable bidders gives uncommon proofs and significant editions an opportunity to be evaluated on those distinctions.
