A Bronze Age first-appearance cover, Golden Age rarity and major 1980s originals pushed the April event across comics and comic art.

Heritage Auctions’ April 3-6 Comics & Comic Art Signature Auction totaled $18,534,539, continuing a strong run for key comic books, original covers and first-appearance material.
The leading result was Gil Kane’s Marvel Spotlight #32 Cover – First Appearance of Spider-Woman Original Art, which sold for $690,000 and set a new auction record for Kane. The cover introduced Spider-Woman in 1977, making it both a major Bronze Age Marvel image and the debut artwork for a character with long-running collector appeal.
The auction also produced a new benchmark for one of the earliest and most historically important comic titles. Detective Comics #1 CGC FN+ 6.5 sold for $228,000. The 1937 issue gave DC Comics its name and remains an early building block of the medium, with very few high-grade examples available to collectors.
Original comic art strength extended beyond the Spider-Woman result. Frank Frazetta’s Night Walk Paperback Cover Painting Original Art brought $528,000, while Arthur Adams and Terry Austin’s New Mutants Special Edition #1 Wraparound Cover Original Art sold for $240,000 and set an auction record for Adams. Tom Yeates’ Saga of the Swamp Thing #21 Cover Original Art reached $192,000, another auction-record result tied to a landmark issue from the 1980s.
The pattern across the sale was clear: collectors were willing to compete for art and comics that sit at turning points in the medium, whether that means a character debut, a title origin or a creator-defining cover.
For consignors asking the best place to sell comic books or comic art, the Spider-Woman result is a strong case study. Heritage placed debut artwork, Golden Age keys and major modern covers in front of bidders who understood their market importance, helping multiple categories set new price references in one auction.
