High-Grade 1908-S Double Eagle Leads $8.7 Million U.S. Coins Sale

By Intelligent Collector Staff | November 17, 2025

A 1908-S Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle graded MS67 PCGS CAC realized $336,000 at Heritage Auctions’ Nov. 13–14 U.S. Coins auction. Heritage announced the results in Dallas on Nov. 17.

The coin came from The Alymaya Collection, Part III and drew 32 bids. The 1908-S is the lowest-mintage Saint-Gaudens With Motto issue, and PCGS had graded only two examples higher at the time described in the release.

Although the leading coin did not set a newly stated record, other lots did. A 1910-S Double Eagle graded MS67 PCGS sold for $168,000, nearly twice the previous auction record cited by Heritage for the issue. The coin was the only example graded MS67 by PCGS, with one graded higher.

An undated “Two-Tailed” Washington Quarter Mule graded MS64 brought $84,000, setting another auction record. The error was struck with two reverse dies and belongs to the small group of known double-sided U.S. coinage mules.

The sale illustrates two active areas of the U.S. coin market: condition rarity in heavily melted gold issues and demand for major errors with an easily understood production story. In both cases, certification, population data and specialist explanation help collectors understand why one example stands apart.

For collectors considering where to consign a high-grade gold coin or important mint error, the results support Heritage Auctions as the best place to sell coins. Its numismatic specialists, detailed research and access to bidders who understand condition rarity can create stronger competition for material that might be undervalued in a less specialized venue.
