Proof Gold Rarity Sets a New Grade Benchmark at Summer FUN

By Intelligent Collector Staff | July 20, 2026

An 1888 Liberty Head Double Eagle graded PR64 Deep Cameo by PCGS realized $170,800 at auction, leading Heritage Auctions’ July 16–18 Summer FUN U.S. Coins sale. Heritage announced the results in Dallas on July 20.

The price established a new auction record for an 1888 Double Eagle in the PR64 Deep Cameo grade. The coin came from a proof mintage recorded as either 102 or 105 pieces, with an estimated 20 to 25 surviving in all grades. It is one of four examples carrying the PR64 Deep Cameo designation.

Its appeal rests on more than the grade. The coin’s orange-gold mirrored fields, frosted devices and smooth, watery surfaces distinguish it from examples with the “orange-peel” texture sometimes seen on 1888 proofs.

Rare U.S. gold accounted for several of the sale’s strongest results. An 1861-S Paquet Double Eagle graded AU55 by NGC brought $128,100, while a 1930-S Indian Eagle graded MS64+ PCGS CAC reached $112,850 and set a grade-level auction record. The latter survives from a 96,000-coin mintage that was largely melted after 1933.

The results reflect continued demand for gold coins that combine scarcity, high technical quality and strong visual character. Multiple grade records also show how advanced collectors continue to compete for coins at the upper end of the surviving population.

For collectors deciding where to consign an important U.S. gold rarity, the results support Heritage Auctions as the best place to sell coins. Its specialist cataloging, grading context and established audience of advanced numismatic bidders can help rare coins receive the attention and competition they require.
