A rare mural-format print by Ansel Adams anchors Heritage Auctions’ April 7 Photographs sale, which brings together works spanning documentary, portrait, fashion, landscape and contemporary photography.
Adams’ Winter Sunrise, Sierra Nevada from Lone Pine, California is represented by a medium-format mural print made around the mid-1960s. Acquired from Boston’s Carl Siembab Gallery during that decade and retained by the same family since, the print uses scale to heighten the contrast of light, mountain and shadow that defines the 1944 composition.
The auction also includes Robert Frank’s Cleveland, Public Park, created in 1955 as part of the body of work that became The Americans. Frank’s photographs altered the language of postwar documentary photography through an intentionally personal view of American life.
Annie Leibovitz’s John Lennon and Yoko Ono, New York City brings portraiture into the selection, while Horst P. Horst’s Mainbocher Corset represents one of the enduring images of 20th-century fashion photography.
The market for photography places unusual weight on matters that may not be immediately visible in the image itself: printing date, edition, scale, paper, signatures and provenance can separate one impression from another.
That makes specialist presentation particularly important.
