An exceedingly rare
From The Bob R. Simpson Collection, Part IX, the Double Eagle became the most valuable lot in the sale, which totaled $67.9 million, making it the highest-grossing ANA-partner rare coins auction in history. Combined with Heritage’s World & Ancient Coins event, the weekend realized $85.7 million.
“It only makes sense that an exceptional coin from such an extraordinary collection would be the top lot in an event of this magnitude,” said Todd Imhof, Heritage’s Executive Vice President. “The results underscore the fact that the world’s most serious collectors of U.S. coins realize Heritage is the premier destination for elite coins from elite collections.”
The $4.44 million price was achieved after a heated contest among at least five bidders who remained engaged even as bidding surpassed $3 million. The result further reinforces the 1927-D Double Eagle’s status as one of the most elusive and coveted coins in American numismatics.
The 1927-D headlined a group of 76 lots from the Simpson Collection, with Double Eagles commanding the top five prices. Other highlights included:
- 1924-S Double Eagle, MS67 PCGS: $930,000
- 1920-S Double Eagle, MS65 PCGS: $564,000
- 1909-D Double Eagle, MS66+ PCGS. CAC: $480,000
- 1929 Double Eagle, MS66+ PCGS: $432,000
The record-setting Double Eagle sale once again demonstrates that when it comes to offering the rarest U.S. coins, Heritage Auctions is the best place for consignors to achieve landmark results.
