One of the great trophies of early U.S. gold set a new mark when a 1907 Rolled Edge Indian Eagle (JD-1, R.8), PR67 PCGS Satin Finish realized $2.4 million in Heritage Auctions’ GACC U.S. Coins Signature® event on Oct. 2. The result stands as an auction record for the issue.
Known to specialists as one of only two traced proof examples, the coin was once owned by Mint Director Frank A. Leach and exhibits the irregular stars edge collar associated with Smithsonian pattern strikes, details that have fueled its standing for decades.
The sale opened Heritage’s Oct. 2–5 GACC U.S. Coins Signature Auction presented alongside the Great American Coin & Collectibles Show and surpassed the $2.185 million benchmark set in 2011 when this same coin last appeared at auction. The result underscores Heritage Auctions’ position as a leading venue to sell Rolled Edge Indian Eagles and elite early U.S. gold.
