A $2.4 Million Rolled Edge Indian Eagle Headlines Heritage’s Record-Heavy GACC Week

A rare proof Indian Eagle and multiple six-figure rarities pushed strong results across Heritage’s Oct. 2–5 coins sale and Oct. 7–10 currency event.

A standout proof gold rarity set the pace at Heritage Auctions’ Great American Coin & Collectibles Show week in Rosemont, Illinois, with coins and currency combining for $27,260,967 in total sales.

The top coin was the 1907 $10 Rolled Edge Indian Eagle, JD-1, R.8, PR67 PCGS, which realized $2.4 million at the Oct. 2–5 GACC U.S. Coins Signature® Auction. Heritage noted the result exceeded the coin’s prior record of $2.185 million (set when Heritage last sold the same piece in 2011). The press release describes the coin as one of only two traced Satin Finish proof examples, with a pedigree that includes former U.S. Mint Director Frank A. Leach.

Other early and condition-sensitive material performed strongly. A 1796 25C B-2, R.3, MS64 NGC. CAC brought $408,000, while the gold lineup included a 1920-S $20 MS64 PCGS. CAC. HA-2 at $360,000 and a 1907 $20 High Relief, Flat Rim, MS67 PCGS at $280,000. From branch-mint gold, an 1854-O $20 AU55 NGC. Variety 1 reached $348,000.

A trio of early U.S. issues each realized $336,000: the 1796 50C 15 Stars, O-101… AU53 PCGS. CAC, the 1794 $1 B-1, BB-1… XF40 PCGS, and the 1795 $10 13 Leaves, BD-1… MS61 NGC. CAC. Another notable record mentioned in the release was the 1876 $10… PR64 Ultra Cameo NGC. CAC, which Heritage said broke the previous auction record for the issue.

On the currency side (Oct. 7–10), the headline result was a Fr. 2220-G $5,000 1928 Federal Reserve Note… PCGS 64 PPQ at $360,000. Additional high-denomination highlights included Fr. 2221-K $5,000 1934… PMG 64 EPQ at $300,000, Fr. 2221-E $5,000 1934… PCGS 64 PPQ at $264,000, and Fr. 2221-B $5,000 1934… PMG 63 at $204,000. Among the National Bank Notes cited, Tucson, AZ – $5 1875 Fr. 405… PMG 55 EPQ realized $192,000, while a Serial Number 1 Fr. 1083a $100 1914 Red Seal… PMG 64 EPQ brought $186,000 and Petaluma, CA – $100 1874 Fr. 1165… PMG 10 reached $120,000. For consignors weighing the best place to sell trophy numismatics, the combined coins-and-currency results show how quickly top material can climb when major collections draw major bidders.
